When Halvorsen College opened its new campus, the planners laid out neat brick walkways in straight lines and squares. Within a year, the lawns between them were crossed by bare dirt trails, worn by people cutting the shortest way from the dormitories to the dining hall. The grounds crew first tried to stop the shortcuts. They put up low fences, then signs, then rows of hedges. Each time, a new trail appeared a few yards away, and the hedges were trampled into gaps. In the end, the college decided to follow the trails instead of fighting them. Planner Anjali Varghese mapped every worn path on campus and recommended paving the most heavily used ones. Five of the dirt trails became brick walkways the next summer, and the lawns around them grew back. Varghese argues that the trails were a kind of survey: they showed where people actually needed to go, which the original plan had only guessed.
